From the heart of Unión Médica to a neuro-cardiovascular platform.
Dr. Julio Gustavo Gonell Morel, one of CENICARDIO's founders, traces the center's origin to the growth of Clínica Unión Médica, inaugurated in Santiago in December 1997. Nearly a decade later, the institution's expansion made clear the need for a unit capable of performing invasive cardiovascular procedures.
Conversations between Unión Médica and the medical group organized as Cenimed led to CENICARDIO in August 2007. The center was placed on the fourth floor, between Intensive Care and Surgery, a location the founding account describes as the heart of the institution. Its formal inauguration took place in December of that year.
From the beginning, the center offered cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology and ablation, pacemaker implantation and peripheral vascular surgery, including vena cava filters. The first interventional services were led by Dr. Héctor Rosario, Dr. Rafael David Hernández and Dr. Andrés Marín.
Technology expanded with GE's Innova 2000 in 2007, the OEC 9900 C-arm in 2013, the Optima IGS330 in 2016 and Siemens' Artis Q Floor in January 2024. This evolution supported the growth of coronary, neurovascular and peripheral vascular procedures.

Institutional roots
Clínica Unión Médica opened in Santiago and created the setting from which CENICARDIO would later emerge.
- 2007
CENICARDIO is born
Unión Médica and Cenimed opened the center in August. Its formal inauguration followed in December, together with the installation of GE's Innova 2000 angiography system.

Expanded capacity
GE's OEC 9900 C-arm was installed in February, expanding the center's interventional capacity.

Optima IGS330
GE's Optima IGS330 angiography system was installed in July.

Artis Q Floor
The Siemens Artis Q Floor angiography system was installed in January.
